For this project, I wanted to depart from the theme of the original cover. The duotones evoke lifelessness that reflects the novel‘s basis on the negative effects of modern capitalism on individuality and overall life. The bleak image also maintains this theme. The lofty philosophical tones of the book’s narration (at some points) are maintained through my use of Zapfino for the novel’s front cover title. DBC Pierre’s name appears boldly on both front cover and spine as his name is a major selling point for this novel. The back cover image of Pierre creates an unexpected and dark quality, presenting the author in a darkly lit frame, with the brightest point being his lit cigarette, and his face focused, after cropping, off-centre and in the top left third of the frame. The teal strip along the edge of the back cover was drawn from the front image and frames the content between. My design presents perhaps a more commercial approach to this novel.
