The 89th edition of the Academy Awards was on Sunday, February 26, 2017 and it was definitely one for the record books. With stars taking the red carpet to show off their glamorous looks, we gathered our picks of the eight winning looks of the night.
Charlize Theron

With her hair slicked back into a simple low ponytail, Charlize Theron’s defined waves were a nod to Old Hollywood glamour yet still maintained the focus on her stunning dress and earrings. It’s this ease of style that has really made Theron a knockout hit on any red carpet. —Anna Lee Boschetto, editor-in-chief
Emma Roberts

An earlier arrival, Emma Roberts remained a highlight from the Oscars red carpet. Taking the “Red Carpet Green Dress” challenge, Roberts pulled off a vintage 2005 Giorgio Armani dress as if it were hot off the runway by pairing it with glam, fresh copper colour and Old Hollywood loose waves. Her Charlotte Tilbury lip, in aptly named Red Carpet Red, was a classy touch to top off her look. —Erin Torrance, digital editor
Jessica Biel

Sequins and shimmering white dresses were big hits on the red carpet. But no one wore it better than Jessica Biel who seemed like she was channelling the Oscar statuette with her killer, flawless body dipped in gold. To accessorize it, her hair was simply separated in the center and pulled back into a super-polished chignon, because sometimes less really means more. —Yasmin Grothé, editor-in-chief
Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae has been somewhat of a red carpet chameleon this awards season. I love how she went for an ultra-glamorous look with a beaded Elie Saab couture gown. The singer/actress showed off her freshly cut pixie, which was adorned with a bejeweled gold headband for a regal touch. —Veronica Boodhan, associate editor
Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson is a red carpet trailblazer. Every awards season the actress hits the red carpet, setting trends and looking stunning. This year was no exception. With a muted copper eye and pink lip, the actress’ pixie punk cut and lived-in colour added some edge. A glam curl pulled back the longer sections of the hair for just a touch of red carpet polish. —Erin Torrance, digital editor
Kirsten Dunst

This vintage-inspired Dior gown is reminiscent of a ’50s fashion sketch right down to the nipped-in waist and bullet bra silhouette. I love the contrast with Kirsten Dunst’s very easy loose blonde locks and minimal makeup with a bright, crimson lip. Brilliant! —Yasmin Grothé, editor-in-chief
Ruth Negga

Hair accessories were big on the red carpet; particularly with short hair like Ruth Negga. Her hairband was a low-key tiara that really complemented her bold, red lace Valentino dress. Often the focus is either on the eye or lips, Negga’s bold red lips and subtle red eye palette were an elegant pairing that elevated her overall look. —Anna Lee Boschetto, editor-in-chief
Hailee Steinfeld

The Edge of Seventeen star was all grown up on the Oscars red carpet in a sheer pastel Ralph & Russo gown. The gown’s high-neck detailing was complemented by a chic double topknot that channelled old Hollywood vibes, while her brown eyeshadow with bronzer and frosty pink lips kept the look fresh and youthful. —Veronica Boodhan, associate editor
